Lithuanian Computer Society (LIKS)

The Artificial Intelligence section of LIKS
(member of European Coordinating Committee for Artifical Intelligence, ECCAI)

Artificial Intelligence section of Lithuanian Computer Society (LIKS-AIS) currently has about 20 members, mainly in Vilnius and Kaunas. LIKS-AIS is the main coordinating center for exchange of Artificial Intelligence related information through e-mail and at the seminars. At LIKS-AIS seminars Lithuanian (and invited foreign) specialists of knowledge and data base systems present their latest research results, practical experience and information from international conferences.
LIKS-AIS members organized International Workshop BalticDB'94 (in cooperation with VLDB Tutorial Series); LIKS-AIS members participate in the international conferences of Artificial Intelligence.

The main directions of Lithuanian Artificial Intelligence research are: Semantical Modelling of Knowledge and Data Bases, Object-Oriented Knowledge-Based Systems, Conceptual Modelling in Law, Rule-based Qualitative Simulation, Expert Systems, Applied Mathematical Logics, Pattern Recognition, Neural Nets, etc. "Principles of Artificial Intelligence" at the Vilnius University, "Knowledge Based Systems" at the Kaunas University of Technology, etc. courses of lectures are presented in Lithuania. There are some doctoral students of AI related subjects at the Institute of Mathematics and Informatics, Vilnius University, Vilnius Technical Univesity.
Practical application of AI achievements in Lithuania currently is in rather preliminary stage, mainly having only research prototypes.

During 1995-1996 some members of LIKS-AIS were the members of European Coordinating Committee for Artificial Intelligence (ECCAI) through the Finish Artificial Intelligence Society (FAIS). Since 1997 LIKS-AIS is a member of ECCAI. The members of LIKS AI section have organised ECCAI’s Advanced Course on Artificial Intelligence ACAI-97 “Artificial Intelligence and Information Systems: Integration Aspects” in Vilnius, June 23–28, 1997.
