The Belarusian national park Belovezhskaya Pushcha makes up an integral natural complex with the same park in the neighbouring Poland and is included in the world cultural and natural heritage. Our reserve, one of the oldest in the world, was set up in the 13th century. The park occupies the territory of 87,6 thousand hectares, the wooded territory being about 88%. Th eforest stretches from north to south for 70 km. The administrative center is situated in the village of Kamenuki, Kamenets district, which is 60km away from Brest. In the course of its existence the resrve changed several names depending on the form of protection: reserve, preserve, preserve-hunting forestry and, finally, national park.
The natural state of wild flora and fauna of the Pushcha made it famous all over the world. But the most wonderful thing about it is the rebirth of the Belovezhsky auroch whose number today is nearing 320. The Belovezhsky auroch, like the Pushcha, is the relic of the ancient period. The auroch is the most ancient animal widely spread in the past. The first written mention about the auroch dates back to the 3rd century B.C.
